I had my Health MOT recently, and guess what came up? Blood pressure. Something I talk about with clients all the time⦠but still, getting my own checked properly gave me a bit of a wake-up call.
The truth is: blood pressure is one of those things we all kind of know about⦠but rarely think about.Ā Until thereās a problem.
So hereās your gentle nudge, from one 40+ body to another, to pay attention to it. Because blood pressure might be silent, but itās got a LOT to say about your future health.
Disclaimer:Ā This blog is for general information and motivation only. Always consult your GP or a qualified health professional for personalised medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment ā especially if youāre managing a health condition or starting a new exercise routine.

š§ What Is Blood Pressure (and Why Should You Care)?
Blood pressure is the force of your blood pushing against your artery walls. Youāve probably seen it written like this:120/80 mmHgĀ - where:
120Ā is the systolicĀ pressure (when your heart beats)
80Ā is the diastolicĀ pressure (when your heart rests)
If itās too high, your heartās working too hard. If itās too low, your organs might not be getting enough blood. Either way, it matters.
ā ļø The Risks of High or Low Blood Pressure
Over time, high blood pressureĀ (also called hypertension) can damage your arteries and lead to:
Heart disease
Stroke
Kidney problems
Vision loss
Cognitive decline and dementia
Low blood pressureĀ (hypotension), on the other hand, can cause:
Dizziness or fainting
Risk of falls (especially in older adults)
Fatigue and brain fog
The scariest part? You might feel absolutely fine.Ā Thatās why high blood pressure is often called āthe silent killer.ā
š Why It Matters More After 40
As we get older, our arteries naturally stiffen, and our risk of elevated blood pressure increases. Other factors also start to stack up:
More sitting, less moving
Weight gain or loss of muscle mass
Stress levels (hello adulting š)
Sleep disruption
Hormonal changes (especially during menopause)
1 in 3 adults in the UK has high blood pressure and many have no idea.
𩺠How To Get Checked
The good news is: checking your blood pressure is quick and easy.
Ask your GP or nurse at your next check-up
Many local pharmacies offer free checks
You can buy a reliable home monitor for less than a fancy takeaway dinner
ā What Affects Your Blood Pressure?
Letās break it down simply:
Raises blood pressure:
Smoking
Too much salt, caffeine or alcohol
High stress
Lack of sleep
Being inactive or overweight
Helps lower/control it:
Regular physical activity
Eating whole foods (less processed stuff)
Reducing salt
Getting better quality sleep
Managing stress (walks, chats, hobbies, yoga ā whatever works for you)
šŖ What Type of Exercise Helps?
Great news: exercise is one of the most powerful tools you haveĀ for managing blood pressure.
Best choices include:
Brisk walkingĀ ā even just 10ā15 mins a day makes a difference
Swimming, cycling, dancingĀ ā pick something fun and sustainable
Strength trainingĀ ā donāt be scared of weights! Moderate resistance training is safe and effective
Yoga or PilatesĀ ā reduces stress, improves circulation, and feels great
Note:Ā If you already know your blood pressure is high, speak to your doctor before starting anything intense.
š ļø Practical Tips to Get Started
Book your checkĀ ā at your GP, local pharmacy, or with a home monitor.
Move a little more each dayĀ ā walking, stretching, anything counts.
Cook at home moreĀ ā less salt, more real food.
Reduce caffeine/alcoholĀ if youāre having more than you realise.
Prioritise sleepĀ ā aim for 7ā9 hours (and wind down without screens).
Check your stress levelsĀ ā and find ways to let off steam regularly.
Set a 40+ health habitĀ ā like I did with my Health MOT ā to check in on your body, not just your inbox.
š¢ Final Word
Your blood pressure isnāt just a number, itās a sign post telling you whether your heart, blood vessels, and lifestyle are in sync. And the sooner you start paying attention, the more control you have over your future health.
