🎈 The Silent Clue to Your Health: Let’s Talk Blood Pressure

I had my Health MOT recently, and guess what came up? Blood pressure. Something I talk about with clients all the time… but still, getting my own checked properly gave me a bit of a wake-up call.

The truth is: blood pressure is one of those things we all kind of know about… but rarely think about. Until there’s a problem.

So here’s your gentle nudge, from one 40+ body to another, to pay attention to it. Because blood pressure might be silent, but it’s got a LOT to say about your future health.

🧠 What Is Blood Pressure (and Why Should You Care)?

Blood pressure is the force of your blood pushing against your artery walls. You’ve probably seen it written like this:120/80 mmHg - where:

  • 120 is the systolic pressure (when your heart beats)

  • 80 is the diastolic pressure (when your heart rests)

If it’s too high, your heart’s working too hard. If it’s too low, your organs might not be getting enough blood. Either way, it matters.

⚠️ The Risks of High or Low Blood Pressure

Over time, high blood pressure (also called hypertension) can damage your arteries and lead to:

  • Heart disease

  • Stroke

  • Kidney problems

  • Vision loss

  • Cognitive decline and dementia

Low blood pressure (hypotension), on the other hand, can cause:

  • Dizziness or fainting

  • Risk of falls (especially in older adults)

  • Fatigue and brain fog

The scariest part? You might feel absolutely fine. That’s why high blood pressure is often called “the silent killer.”

👀 Why It Matters More After 40

As we get older, our arteries naturally stiffen, and our risk of elevated blood pressure increases. Other factors also start to stack up:

  • More sitting, less moving

  • Weight gain or loss of muscle mass

  • Stress levels (hello adulting 👋)

  • Sleep disruption

  • Hormonal changes (especially during menopause)

1 in 3 adults in the UK has high blood pressure and many have no idea.

🩺 How To Get Checked

The good news is: checking your blood pressure is quick and easy.

  • Ask your GP or nurse at your next check-up

  • Many local pharmacies offer free checks

  • You can buy a reliable home monitor for less than a fancy takeaway dinner

✅ What Affects Your Blood Pressure?

Let’s break it down simply:

Raises blood pressure:

  • Smoking

  • Too much salt, caffeine or alcohol

  • High stress

  • Lack of sleep

  • Being inactive or overweight

Helps lower/control it:

  • Regular physical activity

  • Eating whole foods (less processed stuff)

  • Reducing salt

  • Getting better quality sleep

  • Managing stress (walks, chats, hobbies, yoga – whatever works for you)

💪 What Type of Exercise Helps?

Great news: exercise is one of the most powerful tools you have for managing blood pressure.

Best choices include:

  • Brisk walking – even just 10–15 mins a day makes a difference

  • Swimming, cycling, dancing – pick something fun and sustainable

  • Strength training – don’t be scared of weights! Moderate resistance training is safe and effective

  • Yoga or Pilates – reduces stress, improves circulation, and feels great

Note: If you already know your blood pressure is high, speak to your doctor before starting anything intense.

🛠️ Practical Tips to Get Started

  1. Book your check – at your GP, local pharmacy, or with a home monitor.

  2. Move a little more each day – walking, stretching, anything counts.

  3. Cook at home more – less salt, more real food.

  4. Reduce caffeine/alcohol if you’re having more than you realise.

  5. Prioritise sleep – aim for 7–9 hours (and wind down without screens).

  6. Check your stress levels – and find ways to let off steam regularly.

  7. Set a 40+ health habit – like I did with my Health MOT – to check in on your body, not just your inbox.

📢 Final Word

Your blood pressure isn’t just a number, it’s a sign post telling you whether your heart, blood vessels, and lifestyle are in sync. And the sooner you start paying attention, the more control you have over your future health.
