Trialling Whoop for the First Time: A Personal Trainer’s Honest Thoughts After 7 days

If you’re reading reviews about Whoop, chances are you’re asking one of these questions:
“Is it actually worth it?
“Will it help me get healthier or fitter?”
“Is it useful for normal people or just elite athletes?”
That’s exactly why I decided to share my experience using it. Not as a sponsored athlete, not as a tech reviewer, and definitely not as someone pretending to have all the answers after one week...

I’m simply a personal trainer with 20+ years of experience who became curious about where fitness is heading, especially when it comes to wearable tech, recovery tracking and AI-driven health data, because whether we like it or not, this technology is changing the game.
Fitness used to be: “Did you exercise today?”
Now it’s becoming:
How well did you recover?
How stressed are you?
Did you sleep properly?
Are you pushing too hard?
Is your body actually ready to train?
This shift fascinates me, and as someone who works every day coaching real people in the real world, I figured I best get road testing some of the gadgets they're using myself, and here are my thoughts after 7 days of trialing a Whoop...

What Actually Is Whoop?
Whoop is basically a wearable fitness tracker without a screen, and that was one of the first things I liked about it.
Instead of focusing on texts, emails or apps, Whoop is built around:
Sleep
Recovery
Stress
Training strain
Heart rate variability
Daily readiness
The idea is to give you a bigger picture of how your body is coping, not just with workouts, but holistically as a whole.
And honestly, I think that’s where fitness is (and should) be heading, making it less about 'exercising more' and rather asking the question: 'what is best for you and your body right now?'
Why I Decided to Try Whoop Personally
For me, I’m at a stage in life where I’m thinking much more seriously about my recovery and long term health, and hitting 40 years old, being a husband, dad of 2 young children and opening my own fitness facility my days are full on:
Packed lunches
School Runs
Cycling to work
Coaching clients
Creating programmes
Long hours
High energy output
I love it all...but I’m also aware you can’t stay permanently stuck on the accelerator pedal and that’s what made me interested in the data that whoop can provide me.
I wanted to see whether having more awareness around my recovery, stress and sleep will help me feel and perform better in everyday life.
My First 7 Days Wearing Whoop
The biggest surprise? It influenced my behaviour almost immediately.
Not aggressively. More subtly.
I started:
Thinking more about sleep
Going to bed slightly earlier
Paying attention to recovery
Questioning whether I should push harder or pull back
And I’ll admit… part of me did want to “impress the machine.” and one morning it suggested I try some more high-intensity exercise so I ended up lacing up my runners and sprinting up some hills - which was very out of character for me lol.
Where I Think Whoop Could Really Help People
'Intuition' is something we discussed on this weeks Voice Of Fitness Reason Podcast and understanding what your body needs each day is a great place for clients to get to, and after 20+ years experience with fitness myself, I’ve developed a decent understanding of my own body.
I can usually tell:
When I need recovery
When I should push harder
When stress is affecting performance
When you are new to fitness, it's hard to know how hard to push yourself, and when it's time to relax a bit more.
That’s where I think Whoop could genuinely help.
Not because the data is magically perfect... but rather because it encourages people to go through that learning process, which is invaluable for long term health and fitness.
The Part I’m Still Unsure About
Whilst I sing Whoops praises, there is still something I’m very cautious about, and that's an over-reliance on data itself.
For example, what happens if:
You wake up feeling fantastic…
But your app tells you your recovery is poor?
Do you trust your own intuition? Or is it all about scores?
That’s where I think people need to be careful.
I’ve seen this happen with weighing scales, where someone feels fitter, stronger and healthier……but then they jump on the sads step and it changes their entire mood
I think intuition still matters enormously, and the happiest clients don’t blindly follow spreadsheets, they observe. adapt, listen, and learn - and I think that’s even more important in a world full of AI and wearable tech.
So… Is Whoop Worth It?
Honestly? Right now, I think it depends on the person.
If you like the idea of tracking data and learning what impact your daily actions can have on your progress overall, and more holistically, then I'd say theres a good chance you'll benefit from wearing one.
If you’re someone who becomes obsessive with numbers or easily anxious around data, I think you’d want to approach it very carefully.
Personally, after one week, I’m somewhere in the middle.
I can absolutely see the value, but I’m also aware of the dangers of becoming too dependent on the feedback and that’s why I’m treating this as an experiment rather than declaring it “life-changing” after seven days.

If you’re already using Whoop, or considering trying it, I’d genuinely love to hear your thoughts and experiences too and I'll be sure to keep you updated on my developments over the coming weeks too.
Happy Whooping!
