Pilates Is Red Hot 🔥 in 2025 But Is It Right for You?

There’s no denying it, Pilates is having an absolute BOOM in the UK right now, as social media is flooded with beautiful humans performing all sorts of elegant movements in matching outfits, and new studios popping up on every high street, and prices are... well, let's say it’s not the cheapest hobby in town.

As someone who's worked in fitness for over 20 years, I’ve always respected what Pilates can offer, especially in terms of core strength, posture, mobility, and body awareness. But let’s have a moment of honesty together: just because something is trendy now, doesn’t mean it's right for you, so lets dive a bit deeper in todays blog...

A Quick History of Pilates (Yes, It's Older Than You Think)

Pilates was created in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates, a German physical trainer who developed a system of exercises to help injured soldiers and dancers build strength without overstraining their bodies. Originally called 'Contrology,' Pilates focused on precise movements, controlled breathing, and full-body awareness.

Over time, it evolved, split into Mat Pilates (often done on the floor with minimal equipment) and Reformer Pilates, which uses a spring-loaded machine to add resistance and support.

What we’re seeing in 2025 is a resurgence of that Reformer style, particularly driven by the luxury fitness market, celebrity endorsements, and the rise of ‘low-impact, high-tone’ exercise trends. According to recent reports, Reformer Pilates studio openings in the UK have increased by over 150% in the past two years, and social media mentions of #reformerpilates have tripled since the start of the year.

Is Reformer Pilates Better?

Well as always, that depends on the individual in question, but is it great for many people? Absolutely.

It’s brilliant for improving core strength, posture, flexibility, and mobility, and it's especially popular among those recovering from injury or wanting a lower-impact way to stay fit. For some, it’s the perfect combination of strength and stretch. For others, it’s just another tool in the toolbox, but, it’s not magic, it’s not a shortcut, and it’s definitely not essential if it’s outside your budget or just not your kinda vibe.

The Real Keys to Fitness Haven’t Changed

While Pilates can be a wonderful part of a balanced routine, let’s not forget the basics that matter most for long term health and fitness:

  • 🏃‍♂️ Cardiovascular exercise – Walking, running, cycling, dancing… your heart loves it.

  • 🏋️‍♀️ Strength training – Whether it’s dumbbells, bodyweight, kettlebells, or Pilates springs, your muscles (and bones) need regular resistance.

  • 🥗 Nutrition – Fuel your body well. You don’t need to be perfect, just consistent.

  • 💤 Sleep – The real recovery hero.

  • 🤸 Movement you enjoy – Because if you hate it, you won’t stick with it.

So if £30-a-pop Reformer classes don’t float your boat (or empty your wallet), don’t sweat it. There are so many ways to move your body that don’t require boutique studios or fancy equipment.

Want to Give Pilates a Go at Home?

If you’re Pilates-curious but want to start simple, Mat Pilates is your friend. All you need is a bit of space and a mat. Here's how to get started:

  1. Start with the basics: Look up beginner mat Pilates routines on YouTube (or try my FWF Academy where we’ve got plenty of mobility and core sessions to get you going).

  2. Focus on form: Pilates is about control and precision, not reps and speed.

  3. Breathe deeply: It’s not yoga, but your breath plays a big role in activating the right muscles.

  4. Be consistent: Even 10–15 minutes a few times a week can do wonders.

  5. Listen to your body: If something doesn’t feel right, modify or skip it.

Final Thoughts from a PT Who’s Seen It All

Trends come and go in fitness. (Anyone remember Step Aerobics? Zumba? Prancercise?) But what remains true is that the best workout for you is the one you actually do, enjoy, and stick with.

So if Pilates is your thing, go for it. If it’s not, also great. Just keep moving, stay curious, and take care of your health in a way that fits you.
