🍪 3 Simple Steps To Improve Your Snacking Habit

Ever get to the end of the day and think… where did all that snacking come from? You're not alone. It's actually one of the most common things clients struggle with when it comes to nutrition and when my podcast co-host KBC was asked: "How do I get on top of my snacking?" by her client this week we felt it was the perfect opportunity to discuss.

Here are 3 Simple Steps To Help You Improve Your Snacking Habit Today:

Step 1: Get Clear On What You Actually Want To Change

Before you do anything, ask yourself:

  • Am I aware of the amount I'm snacking, and what I'm snacking on?

  • Do I choose to snack because I'm hungry, or because I'm bored?

  • Would I be happy just snacking better, or do I want to snack less?

You can't fix a problem you haven't actually named. So be honest with yourself first.

Step 2: Spot Your Triggers

Snacking rarely happens for no reason. Common ones we hear:

  • 🏠 Working from home, near the kitchen all day

  • 😩 Feeling hungry because main meals aren't filling enough

  • 💻 Needing a break from the laptop (the snack is really just an excuse to move)

  • 🍫 Snacks being easy to grab — right there, no effort needed

Once you know your trigger, you can actually do something about it.

Step 3: Take Action Today

You don't need to go cold turkey. Small changes add up fast.

Make snacks harder to get to

  • Move them to a different cupboard

  • Put them at the back, behind other stuff

  • If it takes effort to reach, you get a moment to think first

Swap, don't just cut

  • Sugary protein bars → fruit (more fibre, more filling)

  • Bag of nuts → pre-portioned nuts (easy to overdo a whole bag)

  • Crisps → boiled eggs or beef jerky (high protein, keeps you full longer)

Portion it out

  • Prep your snacks like you prep your meals

  • Small tubs or bags ready to go

  • Stops "eating from the bag" turning into eating way more than planned

Replace the habit, not just the food

  • Feel like a break, not actually hungry? Try:

    • Boiling the kettle for a cuppa

    • A short walk

    • Anything that gives your hands something to do

Quick Healthy Snack Ideas

  • Boiled eggs

  • Beef jerky

  • A piece of fruit

  • Small portion of nuts + dried fruit

  • Greek yoghurt

  • Veg sticks and hummus

The Bottom Line

This isn't about banning snacks forever. It's about being in control of them, rather than the other way round and if you can get that balance right, then better energy, better habits, and yes — often weight loss too — tend to just follow.

Start with one change this week. See how it goes.
