Weight Loss Injections: Do They Dissolve Fat?! 🤯

“Frank, do these injections actually dissolve fat?”

That’s the question that landed in my lap recently, and I’ll be honest, my jaw quickly hit my lap with it when the shock kicked in. “Umm… sort of? Not really? Let’s talk about it…”

If you're here because you've heard about weight loss injections (like Ozempic, Wegovy, or Mounjaro) and you're wondering what on earth they actually do, you’re not alone. More and more people are asking about them - clients, friends, even my wife's book club. So here’s a little lowdown in plain English - no medical degree required, I promise.

So… Do They Dissolve Fat?

Not quite. Despite sounding like something out of a sci-fi film, weight loss injections don’t melt fat like a hot knife through butter. What they do is affect your appetite and how your body regulates blood sugar.

The most common ones around right now – like semaglutide (brand names: Ozempic for diabetes, Wegovy for weight loss) – work by mimicking a hormone called GLP-1, which:

  • Helps you feel full sooner

  • Slows down how quickly food leaves your stomach

  • Reduces cravings and hunger signals from your brain

So essentially, they help you want to eat less – which for many people leads to weight loss.

The Results? Impressive (But There's a Catch)

The research is pretty eye-opening. People taking semaglutide for weight loss have lost around 10-15% of their body weight over several months. That’s significant, and for many, it’s life-changing.

But here’s the part that doesn’t always make the headlines…

When people stop taking the injections, many regain the weight. Why? Because the medication was doing a lot of the heavy lifting. Without it, those hunger signals come rushing back in like they’ve been on holiday.

Pros of Weight Loss Injections ✅

  • Big weight loss results for many people

  • Can reduce risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and other health issues

  • Might make it easier to create long-term lifestyle change (especially early on)

  • Encouraging research shows they may also support mental health, improving emotional eating patterns

Cons to Consider ⚠️

  • They’re expensive if you’re paying privately - think £100–£300+ per month

  • Common side effects include nausea, constipation, and digestive issues

  • You usually need to keep taking them long term to maintain results

  • They don’t teach you how to move more, eat better, or deal with the emotional side of food

  • Supplies are limited - some people with diabetes are struggling to get them due to demand

My Honest Take as a Personal Trainer 👀

Here’s where I keep it real with you...

As a coach, it’s honestly tough to know exactly what to say to clients who are considering injections.

On one hand, I’ve seen them give people an incredible boost - the kind of confidence and motivation that helps kickstart a long overdue journey to better health.

On the other hand… I worry. Because no jab in the world can replace the power of regular movement, good food, and support from real humans who get it.

And sometimes I feel torn - like I’m meant to have the “perfect” answer, but truthfully, the science is still evolving. Even us fitness pros are learning on the go!

What I Recommend

If you’re thinking about injections, here’s what I’d suggest:

  1. Chat with your GP – not Dr. Google

  2. Be honest with yourself – are you ready to work on lifestyle change alongside the injection?

  3. Have a support system – whether that’s a coach (hello 👋), a friend, or a group that keeps you grounded

Ultimately, it’s not about how you lose weight - it’s about creating a life you actually enjoy living in. Whether you're injecting, squatting, meal-prepping, or just trying to remember where you put your trainers… I see you. You're doing your best. And that’s more than enough.

Final Thoughts 💬

Weight loss injections aren’t magic – but they can be a helpful tool in the right circumstances. They’re not for everyone, and they’re definitely not a “get fit quick” solution. But if they’re something you’re exploring, know that it’s OK to be curious. You’re not cheating, failing, or taking shortcuts - you’re being human.

And if you ever want to talk through it with someone who’s in your corner (and definitely doesn’t have all the answers, but will always tell you the truth)… I’m here.

With protein shakes and dad jokes at the ready,
